Each garment uses kantha from West Bengal, block print from Rajasthan, or zardozi from Lucknow. The techniques are passed down through generations, and our artisans work directly with us to ensure fair wages and safe conditions.
We source GOTS-certified organic cotton and use plant-based dyes for our block prints. This reduces water waste and eliminates harsh chemicals, making the fabric gentle on your skin and the planet.
Every product page includes a size chart with body measurements, fabric stretch notes, and washing instructions specific to the embroidery type. We also share tips on storing and mending your pieces so they last longer.
We produce small batches to avoid overstock and waste. Each item is numbered and may vary slightly in stitch pattern — that is the mark of handwork, not a flaw. You own something truly one-of-a-kind.
Our product pages include a short profile of the craftsperson or community behind the piece. You can read about their training, the region they work in, and how your purchase contributes to their economic independence.
Clarifying our craft
Every garment marked as hand-embroidered is stitched entirely by hand by a single artisan or a small cooperative. Machine stitching is never used on embroidered areas. The kantha, block print and zardozi techniques described on product pages refer to the specific regional method applied. Slight variations in thread tension, motif placement and colour depth are inherent to handwork and are not considered defects.
We source cotton that is certified organic under GOTS or equivalent standards. This means no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified seeds were used during cultivation. The fabric is processed without chlorine bleach or formaldehyde-based finishes. If a product page does not explicitly state “organic”, the cotton used is conventional but always free from harmful azo dyes and heavy metals.
Fair trade for us means direct, transparent payment to the artisan or workshop at the time of order, not after sale. We do not use intermediaries who take a margin without adding value. Each artisan sets their own piece rate, and we publish the name of the lead craftsperson or cooperative on the product page when possible. No child labour is involved, and working conditions meet Indian labour law standards for ventilation, lighting and rest breaks.
Block prints on our linen and cotton pieces use natural dyes derived from indigo, madder root, pomegranate rind and iron mordant. These dyes are free from synthetic aniline compounds. However, the zardozi clutches and some kantha dresses may include small amounts of metallic thread that contains a thin layer of silver or copper plating over a synthetic core. This is disclosed on the individual product page under “materials”.
Because each piece is made to order or selected from a limited artisan run, we accept returns only for manufacturing defects (broken seams, missing embellishments, incorrect sizing versus the size chart). Change of mind or minor colour variation due to screen calibration is not covered. You have 7 days from delivery to notify us via email at info@hannahrickman.com. Return shipping is covered by the customer unless the defect is our error.
Each product page includes a size chart with body measurements in centimetres and inches, plus a note on the typical fit (relaxed, fitted, oversized). Block print tunics and kantha dresses are cut with a 2–3 cm ease allowance. If you are between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size and consulting our fit guide or contacting us directly. Custom sizing is available for an additional charge of 15 % of the product price.
